Merton homes, arranged for the life now in them.
Residential architects across the London Borough of Merton.
The London Borough of Merton was formed in 1965 by merging the boroughs of Mitcham and Wimbledon with the Merton and Morden urban district, all of them previously in Surrey rather than London. If your home is in Wimbledon, Mitcham or Morden, Merton is the authority you apply to, and the three were separate councils when most of these houses were built, which is why precedent still varies across the borough.
We are an architect, design and build studio at 517 Old York Road in Wandsworth. Design and delivery are held in one accountable team, so the studio that draws the home is the studio that builds it. Budget is tied to scope out loud, early, before drawings develop far enough to be expensive to undo.
Elemented works from Old York Road in Wandsworth, and most of what we build sits within a short drive of the studio. That matters more than it sounds: our team is on site rather than travelling to it.
“A strong start creates a better outcome. When the plan is right, the rest moves with ease.”
- The Elemented Team
Everything mapped.
Nothing rushed.
The Elemented way.
Great homes are not created by chance. They come from understanding how people live before deciding how a space should look.
Every Elemented project follows the same journey. We listen first, define what matters, refine every decision and deliver with care.
It is a process that removes uncertainty, creates confidence and results in homes that feel as good to live in as they are to look at.
Who we work with.
We work with people who want clarity before commitment.
Whether it’s a full renovation or a refined upgrade,
planning is where the calm begins.
We only take on a limited number of projects each year.
This helps us make sure we’re the right fit for each other.
Our work is best suited to larger residential projects where early clarity, architectural thinking, and integrated delivery matter.
Which areas does the London Borough of Merton cover?
Wimbledon, Mitcham and Morden, brought together in 1965 from three separate councils that were previously in Surrey. If your home is in Wimbledon, our Wimbledon page covers that area in more detail. Merton is the authority behind all three, and it is the authority you apply to.
Do I need planning permission for an extension in Merton?
Often less than people expect. Many rear and side return extensions fall under permitted development and need no full application. Conservation areas change that, and Merton has a considerable amount of protected ground, particularly around Wimbledon. The Clarity Pack settles that before design begins.
Do you work on period homes in Merton?
That is most of the work. Period and character homes, Victorian and Edwardian, alongside newer houses built well and arranged wrong for the life now in them. Period homes are where holding design and delivery together earns its keep, because what is behind the plaster is rarely what the survey suggested.
Can you design and build a loft conversion in Merton, or only design it?
Both, and we would rather do both. Head height and stair position decide whether a loft becomes a proper retreat or an awkward room, and both are answerable before anything is spent on design. Because one studio designs and delivers, whoever specifies the stair is whoever has to fit it.
What does a side return extension do to a Merton terrace?
It takes the narrow strip beside the kitchen, which most terraces leave over, and turns it into part of the home. What changes is not the floor area so much as the light. It reaches the social heart of the house, which in a Victorian terrace is usually the darkest part of the plan. The structure is where the care goes: a cranked steel beam lets the glass roof and the side glazing meet in one plane, without a post standing in the middle of the room.
What does a project in Merton cost?
We tie budget to scope at the start rather than at the end, which is the point of the Clarity Pack. It gives you an early budget range against your actual scope, the feasibility and planning position, and a provisional timeline. We would rather tell you early that an ambition and a budget do not meet than discover it together on site.
